Previn's celebrated Rachmaninov – Symphonies Nos. 1–3 and the orchestral works – gathered together, famous also as classics of EMI engineering. Everything apart from the Second Symphony appears on SACD for the first time anywhere in the world. Renowned as a showcase for the great engineering team of Christopher Bishop and Christopher Parker (a few items excepted), these are landmark EMI recordings from Previn's prime. Deeply Russian in character, they are historic performances that did much to drive the worldwide Rachmaninov revival that followed. For this reissue the original master tapes held in the home country were digitised at 96kHz/24bit, and the SACD and CD layers were newly mastered separately. Previn became Principal Conductor of the London Symphony Orchestra in 1968 and recorded first for RCA; his Vaughan Williams symphony cycle and his Russian repertoire, headed by Shostakovich's Fifth Symphony, are still highly regarded today. He then went on to record extensively for EMI, and in his 1973 remake of Rachmaninov's Second Symphony he restored the substantial cuts that had until then been standard practice, establishing the work's true stature and profoundly influencing subsequent recordings and performances. That Second Symphony appeared on a Japanese SACD in 2012, but has been newly remastered here along with the rest of the programme. These Rachmaninov sessions took place between 1973 and 1976, with the celebrated Bishop–Parker partnership responsible for all but a few items. Coming at the height of analogue recording, they are well known as some of the finest engineering of EMI's analogue era. The SACD layer in particular reveals how much the venue, the date and the engineer shaped the character of each session. Previn also recorded The Bells, but this three-disc set brings together the symphonies and the orchestral works. This reissue features newly written and detailed notes by Masayuki Takagi, Japan's foremost authority on Previn, containing much of great interest about the recordings themselves. This eleventh instalment of the Definition Series comprises two titles in all.
