The definitive recording of this piece by Ida Handel! This highly acclaimed 1975 recording—made during the golden age of analog—is finally available on SACD for the first time. Along with the Walton recording, this is a highly anticipated reissue! Conducted by Berglund, this is Ida Handel’s supreme interpretation of Sibelius! It is one of her signature recordings and stands as the finest performance among the many stereo recordings of this work. The sound quality is superb, allowing you to fully appreciate the sound of the late analog era from the former EMI label on SACD. For this reissue, we used a master digitized at 96 kHz/24-bit from the original master in Poland and performed new mastering separately for the SACD and CD layers. This is a collection worthy of permanent preservation. Ida Handel, originally from Poland and currently residing in Florida, USA, is the oldest active female violinist today. Having made her debut in England in 1937 as a child prodigy, her performing career spans a remarkable 80 years. In Japan, her name has long been known thanks to her legendary recordings of Beethoven and Brahms violin concertos from the early days of the LP record; however, since she did not visit Japan for a long time and subsequent releases of her albums in Japan were sporadic, there was a period until the 1990s when she was referred to as the “phantom female violinist.” Her recording of Sibelius’s Violin Concerto with Berglund—now recognized as a landmark performance representing her work—was made during that very period, in 1975. Although a Japanese LP edition was released, it failed to garner much attention and went out of print almost immediately. However, as you are well aware, with the advent of the CD era, its true value came to be recognized—primarily by listeners—and it has since been reissued on numerous occasions. (1/2)
