A sextet led by Michihisa Ishikawa, saxophonist of THESKAFLAMES. They’re starting with the release of a 7-inch record as their debut. Renowned “musicians’ musicians” have come together to perform captivating, exotic music. THESKAFLAMES alto saxophonist Michihisa Ishikawa’s solo project is releasing a long-awaited new album—the first in about 15 years since his previous release, “Michihisa Ishikawa Session.” Tomoko Kunimi, trumpeter and flugelhorn player for WackWackRhythmBand; Shinichiro Akihiro, a guitarist who primarily works with reggae artists both in Japan and abroad—including MattSounds and KODAMA&THEDUBSTATIONBAND; and members of benzo and lake, who have also served as support bassists for a wide range of musicians such as Haruomi Hosono, Keiichi Sogabe, Yuichi Ohata, Saho Terao, Yoshie Nakano, Hanaregumi, and Inotomo; drummer Yuko Kitayama, a member of lake who has performed with numerous musicians including Kiseru, Exne Kedi (Kensuke Ide and Hosen), Jiro Miwa, among others—and Kimmigo, a vocalist and keyboardist who has released numerous hit songs as a solo artist. This lineup brings together some of the most renowned figures in the Japanese rock and pop scene. Having performed live in this lineup for nearly a decade, they have finally completed their long-awaited debut recording—a 7-inch single. Truly deserving of the title “double-sided,” the A-side features “I’ll Remember April Fool,” a cute yet somewhat bittersweet original track composed by Ishikawa. The B-side features a reimagined version of the classic “Africa” by Rico Rodriguez—a familiar track to ska and reggae fans—reconstructed with an exotic arrangement unique to this sextet. Both tracks are so exceptional that they feel almost too luxurious to be included on a single record intended as a calling card.
