Böhm's Tchaikovsky with the London Symphony Orchestra, made in his final years, in a new remastering. His only studio recordings of these works, imbued with a distinctive romantic warmth - a valuable document. Newly transferred from the original master tapes held in Germany (Nos. 4 and 6). The three late Tchaikovsky symphonies that Karl Böhm recorded in his final years with the London Symphony Orchestra, of which he had been President since 1977, appear here in a new remastering. The Fourth (December 1977) and the Pathétique (the following year) are analogue recordings, while the Fifth was taped in May 1980, in the early days of digital. Digital recordings by Böhm are rare; the only one to follow was his Beethoven Ninth with the Vienna Philharmonic taped that November, which became his last recording issued on disc (his final recording of all was the video of Elektra with the Vienna Philharmonic). Unusually for Böhm's repertoire, these remain his only studio accounts of these symphonies, which makes them a particularly valuable source. For the Fourth and the Pathétique we went back to the original analogue master tapes held in Germany and carried out a new high-bit, high-sampling digital transfer (192kHz/24bit). Böhm returned to the Fourth Symphony on several occasions, and a 1971 Salzburg performance with the Czech Philharmonic also survives. What makes this DG recording so interesting is the way it combines the weighty, faintly rough-hewn manner one sometimes encounters in German and Austrian conductors with a deeply committed reading quite unlike that of any Russian conductor. Perhaps because of his advanced age, the tempi are very broad indeed - yet this is nothing like the aestheticised, lingering quality Bernstein brought to these scores with the New York Philharmonic in his later years. The low-centred, weighty German sonority reveals another side of Tchaikovsky altogether. Japanese critics were less than enthusiastic when the recordings first appeared, but today the performance surely has many more admirers. The original jacket design has been retained, and the booklet reproduces the existing essay by Yoshiyuki Fujita. Vintage+plus Vol. 29 comprises seven titles in all.
