Mazel’s legendary recording of Zemlinsky’s masterpiece, the “Lyrical Symphony,” is back! Although it was reissued as a domestic release in 1994, it quickly went out of print; this marks its return on CD for the first time in 14 years (it has also been out of print for a long time as an import). The greatest strength of this recording is, without a doubt, the taut sound and overwhelming power created by Maazel and the Berlin Philharmonic. Furthermore, it stands head and shoulders above the rest in terms of precision and suppleness, and the breadth of its expression is truly astonishing. It is a level of artistry that could only be achieved by this particular duo. In terms of interpretive approach, this performance draws the listener’s attention to the work’s novelty—which, while owing much to Mahler, is also closely tied to the Second Viennese School—and clearly conveys the distinctive new sound characteristic of this piece. In that sense, it stands in contrast to the romantic interpretations by later performers such as Chailly and the Concertgebouw Orchestra or Sinopoli and the Vienna Philharmonic. And one thing that must not be overlooked on the Mazel recording is Fischer-Dieskau’s solo. Here, as always, he displays his characteristic eloquence, and the skill with which he narrates the text is unmatched. Some might argue that he divides the verses too much, but this “non-Romantic” style of singing is completely in line with the direction of Mazel’s interpretation. Its persuasiveness transcends personal preference. Varadi (who, as is well known, is his wife), who likely benefited from Fischer-Dieskau’s influence, is also magnificent. If one were to choose just one recording of the Lyrical Symphony, this one would undoubtedly be the top contender. (Fujiwara, Shinjuku Store)
