Mozart's "Requiem" was performed during the memorial mass held at the Church of the Holy Cross in Warsaw, Poland, where Chopin's heart is enshrined, on the 161st anniversary of his death! The performance of Mozart's "Requiem" by the Orchestre des Champs Elysées & Herreweghe followed the reading of a prayer by the priest between each movement and the recitation of Gregorian chant. Mozart's "Requiem" is said to have been requested by Chopin to be performed at his own funeral.It is no exaggeration to say that the performance of Mozart's Requiem that Herreweghe gave at the Church of the Holy Cross in Warsaw was a special performance created to honor Chopin's wishes and the Requiem's status as a part of the liturgy on the 161st anniversary of his death. It is a unique record of Mozart's "Requiem," made possible by the union of Herreweghe, the Orchestre des Champs Elysées, the Collegium Vocale, four world-class soloists, the priest, the audience, and Mozart's music.
