A series introducing the classical music works of Zardel, who was born in Hungary, studied under Rieger and others in Vienna and Leipzig, and then moved to the United States, where he was primarily active in the film industry. “Ode to Peace” was commissioned by the University of Miami Symphony Orchestra; in addition to the instruments on stage, ensembles placed around the audience celebrate the United Nations and its ideal of world peace. The art songs, with lyrics expressing the pain of heartbreak, nostalgia, love, and sorrow, are—as one would expect from a composer who made his name in film music—melodic, dramatic, and romantic. Conductor Smolley’s orchestration heightens the mood, and combined with the beautiful voice of his daughter Matilda, the music seems perfectly suited for the screen of classic American films and television shows. The works for woodwind quintet and brass quintet are in a more modern style. The inclusion of dynamic movements with Hungarian-style rhythms is quintessentially Zardor. Naxos Japan
