This album features a commemorative recital by Chinese pianist Wang Zhang, winner of the 59th Haen International Piano Competition held in 2017. The stylish selection of music, which begins and ends with Ravel, conveys his overflowing talent. A new work is always performed at the Haen competition every year, and the new work for 2017 is Haen's Fantasy by Bonin de Gongora, born in Madrid in 1970. It is a classical work reminiscent of Beethoven's sonatas, but the melodic material is entirely based on the traditional folk music of the Haen, making it a fitting choice for the competition's subject matter. In Ravel's concerto, recorded immediately after the competition as a commemoration of his victory, we can hear a passionate performance in which his technique, musicality, and assertiveness are generously displayed.
