Well, well. I’m sure many of you are wondering, “What is a chistu?” It’s a small flute used for traditional Basque dance music. It has three holes and can be played with one hand, making it a wonderful instrument because the other hand is free to play percussion or other instruments (incidentally, the garbe used in the “Farandole” from Bizet’s *L’Arlésienne* is a similar instrument). The Basque composer Garbis (1901–1989) combined the rustic tones of this instrument with the piano and the tamburil—a double-headed drum also unique to the Basque region—to create truly delightful music. The performer here is José I. Ansolena, the most renowned chistu player (and also a tamburil player) in the Basque Country.
