Rockberg’s piano pieces make us realize something so obvious: simply using the twelve tones opens up infinite possibilities. This is the second volume of piano works by American composer Rockberg, following Vol. 1 (8.559631) and Vol. 4 (8.559634). He composed piano works throughout nearly his entire career, continuing to express a condensed musical world while evolving through various stylistic phases—from his earliest variations in 1941 to “Ring of Fire for Two Pianos” from 1996–97. The “12 Bagatelles” included here are a collection of short yet self-contained pieces. It is said that when pianist Harsh once pointed out to Rockberg a “connection to Schoenberg,” Rockberg immediately countered, “That’s not true.” (Indeed, even if the same 12 notes are used, there is no doubt that changing their structure or arrangement will produce a completely different tone.) The three “Sad Pieces” are surprisingly lyrical, yet they are beautiful compositions that also offer glimpses of a jazz-like atmosphere. Although the Sonata Seria was conceived early in his career, it was revised in the 1950s and finally published in 1998 as a masterpiece. Naxos Japan
