Description:
Matthijs Rocha, a young viola player who has been attracting attention in Europe, has taken up the challenge of performing C.P.E. Bach's cello concerto, which has been his long-cherished dream. Rocha studied with Antoine Tamesti in Cologne and Tatjana Maslenko in Leipzig, and is currently artist-in-residence at the Queen Elisabeth Academy of Music in Belgium with Miguel da Silva, while performing in Belgium, Germany, France, and Switzerland. In 2021, he released an album of Rachmaninoff's cello sonatas and songs on viola, which attracted much attention for its technique and singing. Here he performs the solo of C.P.E. Bach's Cello Concerto in B-flat major, Wq 171, which he says has been his dream for a long time, on viola. In the original recording (in English and German), he says that "the light virtuosity of this piece is suited to the viola," while at the same time he says that he made careful arrangements to get the approval of conductor Howard Griffith, who had been his advisor since he was a teenager. The other two pieces are by Graun, who was a violin virtuoso.Co-performing with him in the concertante is Stefan Wertz of the Netherlands, the winner of the 2014 Menuhin International Competition.
