The woman he loved was the king's mistress! Donizetti's fantastic opera, the prototype for "La Favorito," is now available on film for the first time. The first performance was planned for the Théâtre de la Renaissance in Paris, but it was not realized due to the bankruptcy of the theater just before the performance, and Donizetti himself later abandoned the production due to concerns that the story of the King of Naples and his mistress would violate the censorship. In 1840, most of the material was replaced by "La Favorito" from a different libretto. The score of "The Angel of the Ferns" was split up, but recently the Irish musicologist Candida Manticat has succeeded in restoring almost the entire work by analyzing and reconstructing the remaining unorganized score stored in the Bibliothèque Nationale de France and the score that was converted to "La Favorito. The premiere at the Royal Opera House in 2018, 180 years after its composition, under the baton of Mark Elder, made quite a splash.This video is a record of the unique stage performance, which was staged on the flat floor of the opera house in Donizetti's hometown of Bergamo, with the audience surrounding the stage from the balcony, a surprise performance, as well as the extensive use of paper costumes and fantastic lighting. The lineup of unique singers includes Lydia Fridman as the Countess with a powerful presence, Konu Kim, a beautiful tenor who plays her beloved soldier Casaldi, and Sempei, who sings the King with a lustrous voice.
