Description:
The South Netherland Philharmonic Orchestra was formed in 2013 through the merger of the Limburg Symphony Orchestra and the Brabant Orchestra. This is the third album with Dmitrij Riis, the orchestra's first principal conductor since the 2016-17 season. The Symphonie fantastique includes a collection of songs by 20th-century Dutch composer/organist Hendrik Andriessen, who composed music for "The Mirror of Agony" from "The Mirror of Jesus" by French poet and playwright Henri Guéon (1875-1944). The "Mirror of Agony," which depicts the story of Christ's Passion from his arrest to his death, is a rewritten accompaniment for string orchestra to a work originally written for voice and organ. The mezzo-soprano sings the story wistfully over the slow strings, and it is a very beautiful work that seems to express the healing rather than the suffering itself. Mezzo-soprano Christiane Stouteyn, who has performed with many great singers mainly in her native Holland, a kingdom of music, also enhances the work with her sensitive expressiveness and stable voice.The "Symphonie fantastique" was also performed without the slightest hint of mockery, with the cornetto added in the second movement and other parts not being emphasized to the extreme, but rather the entire large orchestra was utilized to the fullest, and the colors and madness of the work were skillfully depicted, blending the whole as if mixing paints on a palette.
