Description:
Kusenec (1900-1991) was born into a Czech family in Austria, studied under Schreker in Vienna, was branded as a degenerate musician by the Nazis, defected, and worked in the United States. Although forgotten for a time, his operas, symphonies, and orchestral works have been revisited since the latter half of the 20th century. The second collection in this series of Kusenec's piano music features his exquisite compositional technique, which can be described as craftsmanship, as well as his rich imagination and humor. In the early "Toccata and Chaconne, Op. 13," said to be based on Bach's cantata "I Believe," a piece written as a joke intended to hook critics and musicologists, develops into a grand counterpoint essay. The "Three Suites," which deal with baroque and contemporary dances, demonstrate Kuchenek's freewheeling interest in the music. The mournful "Sonata No. 5" was written during his exile in the United States. The concluding "Six Vermessens" is a collection of small pieces with an improvisatory and kaleidoscopic atmosphere, as if modernism and free jazz had met. As in the first collection (TOCC-298), this is performed by the Ukrainian-born pianist Hristenko, who is of American descent. Naxos Japan
