Description:
Korngold was a child prodigy from an early age. From his youth, he produced a succession of works, all of which were highly acclaimed. This "Violanta" is his second opera, written when he was about 18 years old, and shows the influence of Verismo Opera, Puccini, Respighi, and Richard Strauss. The premiere was a great success at the Munich State Opera in March 1916, with another Korngold opera, "Polycrates' Ring," conducted by Bruno Walter. The sensual singing of Annemarie Kramer (Violanta) contrasted beautifully with the sweet voice of Norman Reinhardt (Alfonso) and the rigid singing of Michael Kupfer-Radetsky (husband Simone), while master conductor Pinkus Steinberg brought out the beauty of Korngold's music.
