Description:
This is a collection of works by Carlo Arrigoni (1697-1744), a composer active in 18th century Italy. Born in Florence, little is known about how he became a musician, but he seems to have achieved fame at a young age, as his first oratorio was performed in Florence in 1719 and his opera "La Vedova=The Widow" was performed in 1722. A virtuoso on the lute and mandolin, Arrigoni moved to Brussels and then to Dublin in the early 1730s, where he taught at the Academy of Music. 1732 brought him to London, where he dedicated a cantata to Caroline of Arnsback, Queen of George II, and where he remained until 1736. He remained there until 1736, and is recorded playing the lute at the premiere of Handel's "Alexander's Feast". He then went to Vienna for two years before returning to his hometown of Florence. He ended his life in his birthplace. The arias and cantatas on this album were written during his stay in Vienna, and the music reflects Arrigoni's rich experience in various places and his accomplished writing. All of the recorded works are world premiere recordings.The performances use manuscripts from the Yale Library collection, and with the exception of the Mandolin Sonata (published by Ferrera himself in 2018), all of the music is rare and unpublished.
