[The Diverse Charms of Medieval Lauda, Unveiled Through the Incorporation of Various Ethnic Instruments] At the 2018 La Folle Journée au Japon, Canticum Novum thrilled the audience with a rich program that explored the unexpected connections between traditional Armenian music and European early music. While the group is one of the most versatile ensembles on the vibrant early music scene in France, this time they have focused on the Italian lauda—a genre that can be considered one of the cornerstones of medieval music—and released a new recording that powerfully demonstrates just how diverse the music within this tradition truly is. Amid the Crusades and the rise of the Mongol Empire, the conflict between the Pope and the German Emperor intensified, and the Italian peninsula was thrown into turmoil. Drawing primarily from the “Cortona Lauda Collection,” composed in central Tuscany during the 13th century, the ensemble uses not only European early instruments such as the medieval fiddle and recorder but also—reflecting the cultural exchange between East and West at the time—the Eastern plucked instrument, the oud, various types of bagpipes, as well as the nyckelharpa—a instrument cherished in Nordic music—we vividly bring to life the rich musical world of nearly 800 years ago, based on interpretations grounded in rigorous musicological research. While the intricacy of polyphonic church music, such as the organum, is evident, the lauda—with their simple, accessible vernacular (Italian) lyrics repeated in a way that lingers strongly in the mind—leave a particularly lasting impression. Also worth noting are the liner notes that unravel the secrets of a musical world where the mysteries of the Middle Ages and the cheerfulness of the South intertwine in an enchanting way (the Japanese edition includes translations of the lyrics).
