Artyomov is hailed as one of the greatest Russian composers of our time. Many of his works follow the style of the late Romantic period while incorporating the neoclassical style and mysticism of Messiaen, but he also wrote realistic pieces that at times seem to directly capture the suffering of the Russian people. This album contains four pieces. In Memoriam," with its impressive violin solo; "Lamentations," which thoroughly explores sadness and anger; "Pietà," in which anguish is fully depicted; and "Tristia No. 1," which uses avant-garde sounds to great effect. The orchestra, conductor, and soloists all worked together to give their best performance in order to "make contemporary music thoroughly audible," as intended by Artyomov.
