Beautiful and melancholy Rachmaninoff performed by young musicians Aya Matsumoto, a young pianist, and Zephiran Rey-Beret, a cellist, perform a collection of Rachmaninoff's works. The two are unafraid to sing their own songs in high spirits on these pieces, which have been performed by many greats in the past. In the cello sonata, the piano beautifully colors the cello melody supported by ample rubato. The piano accompaniment is not strong, but it is impressive in the way it leaves a lingering impression. The same is true of the vocalise. The dialogue between cello and piano can be enjoyed to one's heart's content. The highlight is Matsumoto's solo performance of "Piano Sonata No. 2. From the very beginning, the avalanche of piano sounds that overflows with passion is so intense that the listener's ears cannot help but be captivated by it. It is a masterful performance with Rachmaninoff's characteristic melancholy in the rich music. Aya Matsumoto's performance does not take the stance of trying to create new values from the score, but rather, it is the kind of music that carefully approaches a new audience from every moment of "her own heartstrings," which have been moved by witnessing the history of performances accumulated up to now, or the history of listening. Even if the music as a whole is based on magnificent scenes and enormous heat, Matsumoto does not try to depict the contrast of the heat itself.
