Description:

Master Sell left no studio recordings of his repertoire live "Song of the Earth" on UHQCD! Sell + Cleveland Orchestra's stereo live performance is now available on UHQCD! This is a rare Sell recording of Mahler's "Ode to the Earth". Although Sell is not a conductor who loves Mahler's music, it is not his favorite repertoire, as evidenced by his aptitude with the Sixth Symphony. According to his record, he has conducted the "Ode to the Earth" only four times, but the first movement, with its aggressive and frenzied tempo, will leave the listener at the mercy of Mahler. The first movement is a moment of indulgence, which Sell himself had forbidden. The use of melting portamento is another surprising aspect of this piece, which is full of the venom and sex appeal that only Sell, who lived close to the end of the century in Vienna, could have brought to the music. The orchestra is well prepared with Forrester and Lewis, who were the leading Mahler singers in the U.S. at the time, and were also used by Walter. There is no shortage of dramatic expression, and the passion and desolation of the "Farewell" are of desperate beauty. It is a symphony of death for Mahler as well as the "Ninth". This performance was first released on Hunt/ARKADIA, but it was mislabeled as a live performance in Berlin, as well as being in mono.Subsequent products inherited the misdescription, but it has been confirmed that this is a local Cleveland performance, as Sell did not play in Europe with the Cleveland Orchestra in 1967. You can enjoy the superb stereo sound quality. English and Japanese liner notes are included. Muse Trade
