A collection of discoveries by Weird Herald, a cult American West Coast folk-rock band in the lineage of Jefferson Airplane and Moby Grape, is now available from the Spanish reissue label GUERSSEN. The Weird Heralds were based in Los Gatos in the San Francisco Bay Area, and were led by two guitarists, Billy Dean Andrus and Paul Ziegler, both of whom, early in their careers, had played with Jefferson Airplane's Jorma Kohkonen and Moby Grape's Skip Spellman. Paul was invited by Yoma to join Hot Tuna, a side project of Jefferson Airplane, after Weird Herald's hiatus. In the late 1960s, the band recorded a number of songs with the aim of making their record debut, one of which was the promo single "Saratoga James / Just Yesterday". However, a deal was not in the cards, and Billy passed away in 1970 from an overdose, and the album that was to be theirs never saw the light of day.The variety of songs on the album, including the folky "Saratoga James" and "Just Yesterday," the hard rock prototype "Canyon Women," the beautiful harmonies of "Reapin' Seasons," the electric guitar sounds of "In The Country," and the acoustic lingering "David Of Bijou," all reflect the excitement of the West Coast scene at the time.
