Furtwängler & the Italian Radio Symphony Orchestra of Turin: A Unique Tchaikovsky, the Best Haydn! 2-track, 38 cm, Open-Reel Tape Reissue Series ■From the Producer Furtwängler’s recording of Tchaikovsky’s Symphony No. 5 is sometimes called “Furtwängler’s worst performance”—but is that really the case? Admittedly, the sound quality is dry and harsh, but if you listen to this recording with its clearer sound, you should be able to clearly understand what Furtwängler was aiming for. In any case, there is no doubt that it is an extremely valuable recording as the only existing recording of the Fifth Symphony conducted by Furtwängler. Note that the cut in the fourth movement is specific to Furtwängler’s interpretation and is not a missing section of the recording. Furthermore, the spontaneous applause that erupted at measure 471 of the fourth movement has been included without being cut. Perhaps because Haydn’s orchestration is small, one is struck by just how richly the sound is captured (for example, at the beginning of the first movement, you can clearly hear Furtwängler taking a breath in time with the music). The performance itself is incredibly passionate and fiery, just as one would expect from a live recording; this may well be the finest performance by Furtwängler and the Italian National Symphony Orchestra of Turin. (Disclaimer) Since this recording is sourced from an acetate master, it contains noise similar to that found on SP records.
