Semiramis, Queen of Ancient Babylonia, had previously conspired with Assur, a prince from India, to poison her predecessor, King Nino. Fifteen years later, she has shifted her affections from Assur to Arsace and plots to marry Arsace while neglecting Assur. Assur, who had believed he would become the next king, was naturally furious; moreover, Arsace was already in love with a woman named Azeema. Amid the tangled web of the characters’ schemes, a shocking truth was revealed: Arsace was Semiramide’s long-lost biological son. How will the story end? Based on Voltaire’s play, this opera seria presents a side of Rossini that is entirely different from the lighthearted image many people imagine. Featuring intricate and brilliant arias alongside a rich orchestral score, it demands unimaginably difficult technical skills from the singers, and the orchestra must give its all in every respect. This performance meets all these requirements perfectly. Not only is the conducting by the veteran Zedda superb, but the singers—led by Papathanasiou, who portrays a bewitching Semiramide—are also magnificent.
