Smetana Quartet

Description:

DENON ORT MASTERING SACD Series No. 15 The world-famous Smetana Quartet from the Czech Republic gives a superb performance of "America" recorded in 1978 and released on CD for the first time! This is the first SACD release of "America" recorded in 1978, and the first SACD release of "Death and the Girl" recorded in the same year, both in high-resolution format using ORT mastering. New commentary is included. Dvorak's "America" and Schubert's "Death and the Girl" from the live recording of the Smetana Quartet's visit to Japan in 1978 are coupled. The ORT mastering technology originally developed by Nippon Columbia was used to create the high-resolution version, which is now available on SACD for the first time. The CD layer also uses this mastered sound source. The Smetana Quartet was very familiar to us, having visited Japan 12 times since their first appearance in 1958 until their last in 1988. The two pillars of their repertoire were works by Smetana, Dvorak, Janacek, and others from their native Czech Republic, and works by the Viennese classics, from Haydn to Mozart, Beethoven, and Schubert. In other words, the combination of Dvorak's "America" and Schubert's "Death and the Girl" from the 1978 digital live performance on this CD is a typical example of the Smetana Quartet's program. The Smetana Quartet was known for its perfectionism in playing from memory. Even if they had played a work many times in the past, they never tried to play it by rote, but rather confirmed the basics of pitch, tone, harmony, rhythm, and tempo with each other. Naturally, this perfectionism carried over to their recordings, which is why it was so difficult to make live recordings for their records. Eduard Herzog, the director of the Supraphon, said, "The Smetana Quartet has been playing regularly in Japan for 20 years now, and we know how a receptive Japanese audience can create an environment that inflames the performing artists," which is why they agreed to record the quartet live as "a totally exceptional event. (OX7151, liner notes). The result is as wonderful as it sounds on this CD. (1/2)
