Bach on the Baroque violin, performed by Chima Kawahara, who is active with the Classical Quartet, the ensemble “Onkyo Zanmai,” and Ensemble BWV2001. Chima Kawahara, who masterfully plays two types of violins with distinct playing styles—the modern violin with the Classical Quartet and the Baroque violin with Ensemble “Onkyo Zanmai” and other groups—finally takes on Bach for the first time, a project she has been nurturing for many years. How much expressive diversity is possible within the confines of a single piece? It is only natural that this challenge would have sparked Bach’s ambition. Amid this diversity of expression, whether in a sonata or a partita, his ultimate goal was to demonstrate the ideal of “music as drama woven from a single melody”—or the boundless possibilities revealed by a single melody.
