Arab Strap, the Scottish legends formed by Aidan Moffat and Malcolm Middleton, are releasing their ninth album, Half-Told Tales, on Mogwai’s label, Rock Action, 30 years after their debut single. Arab Strap’s new album, Half-Told Tales, marks the group’s ninth album and is being released nearly 30 years after their debut single. “Since we’re celebrating our 30th anniversary this year, we decided to mark the occasion by doing what we love most: making new music,” the duo says. “We really gave it our all this time. Usually, we have three or four songs left over after a session, but this time we just felt like, ‘Whatever,’” says Aidan Moffat. With a major milestone approaching, they felt the urge to lay everything bare. “We’ve been around for 30 years, so there’s no need to hide anything. There’s no need to feel anxious either. I think this will help people better understand what we’ve been working on and the breadth of our work. Plus, there should be a few surprises,” Moffat continues. This 14-track album is full of surprises right from the start. The opening track, “I Get Noise,” fuses a heavy, powerful guitar riff, intense drums, and a free-spirited saxophone, as Moffat imagines himself seeking solitude and escape amid the ear-splitting clamor. It quickly transitions into “YouYouYou,” which sounds like a long-lost gem that leapt right out of an Italo disco record. The tension found in tracks like this—where a groovy, fluid beat intertwines exquisitely with intense guitar sounds—reflects the band’s constant process of trial and error in their songwriting. While the album tackles many weighty themes—ranging from personal to political—it was important for Moffat to find a sense of optimism within them. And perhaps the most prominent theme running through the entire album is “time.” (1/2)
