In December 2013, the German prodigy Philipp von Steinecker made his debut with the New Japan Philharmonic in Beethoven’s “Ninth,” drawing acclaim for his brilliant performance. Philipp von Steinecker, who is rapidly rising as both a conductor and cellist, brought together members of European period ensembles and the Mahler Chamber Orchestra to found Musica Seculum, a period orchestra based in Bolzano, South Tyrol. In his performance of Bruckner’s “Symphony No. 1” with Musica Secolorum, using period instruments, the fresh, clear sound, the exquisite balance between strings and winds, and the meticulous analysis are particularly impressive. He delivers an outstanding performance that transcends the boundaries between modern and period-instrument approaches. Philipp von Steinecker, who leads Musica Seculorum, is from Germany. As a cellist, he has performed with the Mahler Chamber Orchestra and the Lucerne Festival Orchestra, and has served as principal cellist with the English Baroque Soloists and the Orchestre Révolutionnaire et Romantique, gaining extensive experience in both modern and period performance practices. and in recent years, he has been actively pursuing a career as a conductor.
