B.A. Zimmermann began his musical studies in Cologne in 1938, but was drafted into the army at the beginning of World War II in 1939. He served for three years, but was relieved of duty after suffering from a chronic skin disease caused by toxic substances. This experience, along with his analysis of war and the phenomenon of time, characterize the work written during this short period. The symphony's premiere in 1952 was harshly criticized. Zimmermann promised to become a "more experienced orchestral writer" and immediately rewrote the work, retitling it "Symphony in One Movement.In this revision, Zimmermann shortened the work and also reduced some formal elements. The recording is a world premiere based on the much-criticized first edition ("Symphony"), while the "Giostra Genovese" (Ballet Suite) follows the form of 16th- and 17th-century dances and is peppered with references to works by composers both old and new. Music for the Supper of King Ubu was composed in 1965, when Zimmermann was welcomed as a member of the Berlin Art Academy. The work consists entirely of collages (pasting together) and decollages (tearing out parts of the original work) of other past composers' and Zimmermann's own musical works. King Ubu" is a play by Alfredo Jarry (1888) that satirizes a country bourgeois who has risen to dictatorship. It had a great influence on the Dadaists and Surrealists, and Zimmermann also used King Ubu as a subject in his 1961 work.To this day, it is considered one of the darkest, most provocative and politically charged of all musical works.
