A comprehensive collection of recordings by the cellist who became the first Chinese artist to sign an exclusive contract with DG Chinese cellist Zhang Wang was the first Chinese musician to sign an exclusive contract with Deutsche Grammophon. His first release was a recording of Brahms’s Piano Trios with Maria João Pires and Augustin Dumay in 1995. For the first time, all of Zhang Wang’s recordings made for Deutsche Grammophon, Universal Music Australia, and Deutsche Grammophon China have been compiled and released. This 11-CD box set includes his latest album, *J.S. Bach: Cello Suites*, which had previously been available only in China and is now being released worldwide for the first time. In addition to J.S. Bach, his repertoire spans a wide range of composers, including Mozart, Brahms, Haydn, Schumann, Elgar, Sibelius, Fauré, Messiaen, Boccherini, and Couperin. Jean Wang’s artistry captivates audiences with its warmth, elegance, and rich expressiveness, whether in the world’s leading concert halls or on more intimate stages. He has performed with renowned artists such as Maria João Pires, Augustin Dumay, Gil Shaham, Claudio Abbado, and Yolan Sersel. Jean Wang has a particular personal attachment to “Reverie,” a collection of pieces arranged for cello and guitar, which he performed with Sersel. “I became a cellist because my father was one, but the guitar is actually an instrument I love dearly. Its sound is understated and pure. It evokes a sense of many memories coming back to me, and the spaces between the notes remind me of a sense of loss and things that have passed. Yoran has been a tremendous inspiration to me. I was truly happy to be able to record with him,” he says. At the age of 10, Jean Wang had the opportunity to perform in front of Isaac Stern. That performance was featured in Stern’s famous film *From Mao to Mozart: China’s Isaac Stern*, bringing her international attention. She is currently active as a soloist, chamber musician, recording artist, and teacher. Speaking with gratitude about this set, which compiles recordings spanning over 30 years, Jean Wang said, “Signing with Deutsche Grammophon at the age of 25 meant the world to me. And that hasn’t changed.” The 36-page booklet features new liner notes by British music writer and author Jessica Duchen, based on a recent interview with Jean Wang.
