The English Music of Martin Brabbins! The second collection of Tippett's symphonies! Martin Brabbins was the Permanent Conductor of the Nagoya Philharmonic Orchestra from 2003 to 2016, and has taken on the major role of Music Director of the English National Opera since 2016. This collection of symphonies by Michael Tippett (1905-1998) begins as a new modern British music by Brabbins, who has received high praise for his recordings of Walton, Elgar, Vaughan Williams, and others. Volume 1 (Symphonies No. 1 & No. 2/CDA 68203) has received high acclaim, including a nomination for the British Gramophone Award 2018. This second volume includes the mid-period work Symphony No. 3 (1970-72) with solo soprano participation, the late single movement Symphony No. 4 (1976-7), and the world premiere recording of the Symphony in B-flat major (1392-3, rev. 1934, 1938). The Symphony in B-flat major was Tippett's first work, the first draft of which was completed in 1933. Although revised in 1934, the symphony was performed only five times and was never published because the composer himself withdrew it, and has never seen the light of day since.Using a recently discovered manuscript score, Brabbins & the BBC Scottish Feast are performing the work in 2018 for the first time in over 80 years (the first performance of the version including the 1938 revision). Brabbins' highly acclaimed Tippett recording project continues from his Piano Concerto with Stephen Osborne (CDA 67461/2) and is a must-see for fans of British music and rare symphonic works!
