Nézet-Séguin's new album features the first symphony by a black woman in the U.S. In 1933, Florence Price's Symphony No. 1 was the first symphony by a black woman to be performed by a leading American orchestra. Well versed in American folk music, Negro spirituals, and church music, Price's work reflects her experience as a black woman in the post-Civil War era. Commissioned by the "Federal Music Project" at the peak of the Great Depression, Price composed her Third Symphony in the midst of the "Chicago Renaissance," a powerful movement for black writers and artists. Price's engaging Third Symphony shows her growth as a composer. She takes risks, yet incorporates modern techniques, and expresses a wider range of emotions than in the more traditional First Symphony. These two symphonies were performed by the Philadelphia Orchestra, conducted by Yannick Nézet-Séguin, and recorded in 2021 at Verizon Hall, Kimmel Center for the Performing Arts, Philadelphia.
