Description:

A compilation of historic recordings by 23 conductors who helped shape Decca's early 20-year evolution 21-CD box setDecca Conductor's Gallery, a collection of classical recordings made by 23 conductors between 1929 and 1949, including the early 20 years of Decca and the golden age of ffrr (full-frequency band recording) technology, will be available in the "Decca The 21-CD box set is a must-have for fans of historical recordings. This set is a must-have for fans of historical recordings. Decca's first memorable recording was Dilius's "Currents" in May 1929. Its conductor (Anthony Bernard) did not even have his name printed on the label of the old 78 rpm recordings, but eventually Erich Kleiber's name on the later recordings in this set became very notable. In other words, it is a testament to how far the label has come in these early two decades to weather the commercial storms and become a symbol of excellence and world-class musical artistry from all over the world. Prewar recordings, both old and new, inevitably focused on the talents of British and Irish conductors.Hamilton Harty's Haydn and Walton, William Walton, who made the first recording of his own "Facade," Henry Wood's Vaughan Williams, and Elgar and Coates. One particularly valuable recording in this set is Mengelberg's 1936 recording of Bach's Concerto for Two Violins. The postwar material includes several well-known conductors who had been active on the podium before the war, but their names might have been forgotten had Decca not picked them up. Albert Coates, who became enamored with the Russian repertoire and recorded it himself; Clemens Krauss, who performed R. Strauss brilliantly in Milan and London; and Leo Bretsch's genius Haydn's "Astonishment" Symphony. Composers and conductors of the mature period include Grzegosz Fitelberg with Tchaikovsky's Symphony No. 3 and Jorge Enescu with Schumann's Symphony No. 2. There were also the exciting young conductors who energized the London music scene in the postwar years. It includes Serge Celibidacke's shockingly whimsical Tchaikovsky, Jean Martinon's stunning Ravel, and Piero Coppola's majestic Schumann. Remastered from the best available sources by Mark Obert-Sohn, Ward Marston, and Andrew Halifax. Includes recordings that are being released on CD for the first time, as well as previously unreleased recordings. Includes a 72-page photo booklet with interesting essays by Peter Cantrill, Mark Obert-Sohn, and Andrew Halifax, and detailed recording data. Universal Music/IMS
