The three excerpts from *Julietta*—recorded for the first time—are from the world premiere performance held at the Rudolfinum in Prague on December 11 and 12, 2008. As the subtitle “The Key to Dreams” suggests, *Julietta* is a fantastical opera featuring characters such as a “dream broker” and a “man who sells memories.” Composed during Martinou’s time in Paris, this opera was originally written in Czech with a Prague production in mind. However, to ensure more effective promotion for the work—and since preparations were already underway for a French-language libretto based on Georges Nouvet’s original play—Martinu wanted to find a way to adapt the most relevant scene highlights for French-language radio broadcasts. However, it was never actually broadcast, and the work had to wait some 70 years until this premiere. The conductor for this historic world premiere was Sir Mackerras, a specialist in Czech music. Under his baton, the prestigious Czech Philharmonic was joined by none other than the world-renowned soprano Kojner, a native of Brno, in the title role—a cast so stellar one could not have asked for more. Incidentally, Kožená had also sung this role in a complete concert performance of the French-language version at the Barbican in March 2009 (conducted by Bělohlávek), where she received high praise. The album also includes an orchestral suite composed by Vostjak (1920–1985) in 1969, which, like *Martinů*, distills the essence of the work. [Comment provided by King International] ---
