The 23rd SACD hybrid version of the latest reissue project of ETERNA's original analog tapes in Japan, recorded by Otmar Switner (1922.5.16-2010.1.8) at the age of 41 with the Staatskapelle Dresden, the orchestra that premiered "Salome" in the former This is the world's first SACD release of one of the representative East German recordings of R. Strauss, "Salome," which was first performed at the Dresden Opera House in 1905, and since then the tradition has been nurtured and cultivated in the region. This recording, made some 60 years after the premiere, is the best of the former East Germany of that time, and is an important recording for Switner, who was appointed General Music Director and Chief Conductor of the Dresden Opera House and Staatskapelle Dresden in 1960. The orchestra was well versed in R. Strauss, and Switner, who originally studied conducting under Clemens Krauss and made his conducting debut as a conductor in 1942 with R. Strauss. His debut as a conductor was in 1942 with R. Strauss' "Der Rosenkavalier" (arranged by Switner for small ensemble.The use of Switner, who had heard and praised this performance by R. Strauss himself, is in keeping with ETERNA's intention to produce the definitive stereo recording of "Salome" at the time. The reissue of the recording has improved the resolution, allowing us to grasp the finest details. I hope that this reissue will lead to a reappraisal of this disc itself, including its delicate singing and orchestral timbre. The title role of "Salome" was actually played by Christel Goltz at its Japanese premiere at Festivals Hall in Osaka on April 24, 1962, exactly 60 years ago. This year marks the 110th anniversary of Christel Goltz's birth, and this time we can hear in high sound quality the voice of this famous German soprano, who excelled in the roles of Salome and Elektra, and whose voice is unmistakable. For this reissue, the master tapes were flown from the label to the studio of Vienna-based mastering engineer Christoph Stickel, where they were mastered in the analog domain, and then digitized using two separate systems: DSD for the SACD layer and PCM for the CD layer. The project was then digitized into a product. This project realized the ideal method of mastering as far as currently conceivable. The effect is remarkable: it is possible to reproduce the quality left on the master tapes with extreme fidelity, and the mastering in the analog domain only and direct DSD conversion have even greater sound quality benefits.The result is a performance of such clarity and resolution that one can expect to appreciate it even more than before. The manual also includes a color photo of the outer box of the original analog master tape used in this project.
