This album features the piano quintets of Boris Ivanovich Tishchenko (1939-2010) and Leo Ornstein (1892-2002) with the Asassello Quartet. Tishchenko studied with Shostakovich and Ustvolskaya at the Leningrad Conservatory, where he has taught since 1965, becoming a professor in 1986. Born in what is now Ukraine, Ornstein developed a talent for the piano at an early age, and was a child prodigy who was accepted to the St. Petersburg Conservatory at the age of 10.He came to the United States in 1907 and was admitted to the Institute of Musical Arts in New York, the predecessor of the Juilliard School. He gave the American premieres of piano works by Scriabin, Stravinsky, Ravel, Schoenberg, Kodály, Bartók, and others. He is also a gifted composer and has composed a number of works with piano, including the piano quintet recorded here. (King International)
