Description:

The legendary label 〈GhettoRecords〉, founded by Latin music innovator and pioneer Joe Bataan. The label’s debut release—a hard salsa and Latin soul masterpiece by Eddie Lebron and Orquesta Suave—is being reissued with bonus tracks! 〈GhettoRecords〉 was Joe Bataan’s means of defeating the establishment and breaking free from the ghetto. It was also a bold endeavor by artists seeking independence and creative autonomy in an industry that had exploited their talent and treated them as mere commodities. Though born out of hardship and filled with hope, GhettoRecords’ activities came to a halt shortly after its launch, and the seven albums released on the label remained out of print and buried for a long time. Eddie Lebron’s *Ghetto Records Presents…* (1970) is one such work. Lebron was *Ghetto Records*’ first signed artist. Buttern oversaw this pianist’s recording sessions and, crucially, understood that Lebron wanted to include English-language soul ballads on the album. This element of English-language soul ballads would become a defining feature of all subsequent releases on the label. In addition to LeBron’s backing band, Orquesta Suave—which had a background in R&B and doo-wop—Buttern invited his high school friend Abdul O’Dool to sing the classic hit “ (I Love You) For Sentimental Reasons.” A native of Puerto Rico who had been raised in New York since the age of five, Lebron belonged to a generation of “New Yorkicans” (Puerto Ricans living in New York) who expressed themselves through salsa. Not only did he play the piano and lead Orquesta Suave, but he also composed and arranged the songs included on this album. In addition to being the debut release for both Ghetto Records and Eddie Lebron’s band, *Ghetto Records Presents…* is notable for its eye-catching cover art by Izzy Sanabria. However, Lebron and Orquesta Suave parted ways after recording this album. The main reason was that Lebron had become increasingly busy as a sideman, with demand for his services on the rise. In fact, for the next 20 years, he continued to play piano for numerous major salsa bands, while also composing and arranging music. Although it was reissued in 2023 by Now-Again Records, this release includes an insert with liner notes and two bonus tracks.
