Description:
Haydn's Stabat Mater conducted by Jacobs and the Basel Chamber Orchestra with Christensen, Imler, and other great singers as soloists. Performed in an extended wind instrument version arranged by Neukom! The religious poem "Stabat Mater" written by a medieval Italian monk named Jacopone Todi has given birth to numerous masterpieces since the Renaissance, including Josquin des Prez, Palestrina, Vivaldi, Scarlatti and his son, and Pergolesi. In the Classical period, Haydn's "Stabat Mater" (1767), a large-scale religious music, was composed under the influence of the late Baroque masters active in and around Vienna, including Hasse. Soon after its release, it became a famous piece performed throughout Europe, including four times at the Concert Spiritual in Paris. In the course of its repeated performances, the orchestration seems to have been changed by the addition of instruments, and in 1803, Haydn's pupil Neukom produced a revised version with a drastically changed orchestration. The original instrumentation consisted of strings, organ, and oboe (with a replacement for the English horn), but in Neukom's arrangement, the wind instruments were greatly expanded to include one flute, two oboes, two clarinets, two bassoons, two horns, two trumpets, and two trombones, and a timpani was also added. timpani is added. This changed the appearance of the work, making it more dynamic and flamboyant. René Jacobs, who has recorded Haydn's oratorios "The Creation" and "The Four Seasons," has adopted this revised version by Neukom for his recording of "Stabat Mater," and the music is dramatic enough to remind us of an opera. Norwegian soprano Birgitte Christensen, who specializes in old music, Swedish alto Christina Hammerstrom, and Australian tenor Steve Davislim, who hails from Malaysia, have performed with Jacobs in many performances, Bass Christiane Imler, who is also well-known in the Bach Collegium Japan, and a good selection of soloists. The Basel Chamber Orchestra is a remarkable orchestra that plays both modern and period instruments, and has made many recordings with Giovanni Antonini and Heinz Holliger, including a series of complete Haydn symphonies under the direction of Antonini (in progress). He has also recorded extensively with Heinz Hölliger and Haydn. This will be his first recording with Jacobs. The Zurich Singing Academy is a renowned Swiss choral ensemble with a total of 32 members, 8 from each of the SATBs, for this recording. They have collaborated with Jacobs on "Weber: Die Zauberflote" (KKC-6532) and "Beethoven: Fidelio" (KKC-6133). King International
