Description:
Voices of Survivors of the March 11, 2011 Great East Japan Earthquake Bring a Big Band and Narrative Suite to New York—Producer and Composer Migawa Miyajima, Nominated for Six Grammy Awards, Conducted the Interviews and Composed the Music Herself! A jazz suite completed over the course of seven years by composer Migiwa Miyajima, who experienced the Great East Japan Earthquake on March 11, 2011. The composer personally conducted numerous interviews with 20 individuals, weaving their stories—including a pastor who lost his home, a mother and son who lost their parents in the tsunami, a young man working to rebuild his town in the disaster zone, a mother who overcame cancer after the disaster, and Japanese-American immigrants who continued to provide support from New York—into nine narratives told through music and English narration. The performance is by the big band “Migi Augmented Orchestra,” led by Miyajima. The album features a live recording from March 17, 2025, at the jazz hall of fame “Dizzy’s Club at Jazz at Lincoln Center,” comprising 13 tracks totaling approximately 72 minutes. In the U.S., this work received support from seven arts organizations, including the Jerome Foundation, the MAP Fund, and the NYC Women’s Fund. A soul-stirring musical documentary jazz album that transcends sorrow to convey hope and resilience to the future! Mixing and mastering were handled by master engineer Jay Messina, who has worked with Miles Davis and John Lennon.
