The Teatro La Fenice in Venice opened in 1792. Five of Verdi's operas, "Ernani", "Attila", "Rigoletto", "La Traviata", and "Simon Boccanegra" were premiered at this theater, making it one of the most prominent theaters in Italy, the birthplace of opera. The theater was built after a fire that broke out once every 500 years, and the name "Fenice" is a reference to the Arabian phoenix that rises from the ashes once every 500 years. The first fire occurred in December 1836. It was rebuilt the following year, ushering in an era of glory. The second was in January 1996. It was devastated and took eight years to rebuild. In December 2003, the phoenix reopened with a concert conducted by Italian maestro Riccardo Muti, and the phoenix, revived from the fire loss, celebrated its rebuilding with a New Year's concert on New Year's Day 2004, conducted by Lorin Maazel.Later, Kurt Mazur, Kazushi Ohno, John Eliot Gardiner, Georges Prêtre, Myung-Whun Chung, and others took the podium to celebrate the start of the New Year. In 2024, exactly 20 years after its reconstruction, Fabio Luisi, Chief Conductor of the NHK Symphony Orchestra, will take the podium. The singers will be Eleonora Bratto, an authentic soprano born in Mantova, Northern Italy, and the passionate tenor Fabio Sartori as soloists in a spectacular concert befitting the opening of the New Year.
