Maripiero & Monteverdi: String Quartets is a unique project that brings together the works of two Italian composers almost 300 years apart. Incidentally, Malipiero was also known as a researcher and reviser of Monteverdi's scores. By placing Maripiero's String Quartets Nos. 2, 3, 4, and 6 between all of Monteverdi's four-voice masses (vocal works arranged and performed for string quartet) written around 1650, the two 300-year-old works react chemically with each other, creating a strange sense of timelessness. Maripiero was never a Romantic composer, but rather tended toward neoclassicism, and the interspersing of his works reveals an unexpected radicalism in Monteverdi's music.
