Above all, Antonino Siragusa’s Elvino—a huge hit in Japan—is a must-hear. Siragusa, who like Bellini hails from Sicily, possesses a crystal-clear, beautiful voice that is perfectly suited to Bellini’s music. Veteran bass Simone Alaimo also delivers a magnificent performance. And the one to watch is Cuban soprano Eglise Gutiérrez. Although she is still a young soprano who had just graduated from the Philadelphia Academy of Vocal Arts in 2004, she has been rapidly rising to prominence in recent years. She has earned high praise for her performances in operas by Donizetti and Bellini, as well as for roles such as Gilda and Violetta in Verdi’s works; in the spring of 2010, she sang the role of Elvira in *I Puritani* in Madrid, opposite Juan Diego Flórez. She has not yet released a CD, so this marks her debut recording. The singer is supported by the perfectly styled conducting of the master Maurizio Benini. The production, directed by Hugo de Ana, is a co-production with the Teatro Filarmonico in Verona. The set design, which makes extensive use of greenery to emphasize nature, was hailed as the most beautiful production of *La Sonnambula* in recent years.
