Description:
From soldiers marching, the clash of swords, artillery fire, and triumphant returns to victory—all the way to the scars of battle— highly orchestrated depictions of combat! A thrilling performance of "Letzball" and a collection of "Battaglia" pieces bursting with imagination “Battaglia” (battle) was a genre of music depicting combat that flourished from the 16th to the 18th centuries and developed significantly during the Baroque era. From famous pieces like Biber’s “Battaglia,” which depicts battle using counterpoint reminiscent of modern music, from famous works like Schmeltzer’s *Fencing Manual*, which vividly depicts a fencing match, to pieces rarely heard today—Baroque violin virtuoso Gunnar Letzball presents a wealth of them. Sharp musical ideas, intense sonic friction, and a constant flood of stimulating imagination. The album is also packed with virtuosic violin techniques. “I would like to make it clear that I am a passionate pacifist and have absolutely no intention of glorifying war. As a Christian, I believe in turning the other cheek and resolving conflicts through positive expressions of friendship and dialogue. After all, we are all brothers! Personally, I believe the “Lament”—which is often performed following battle scenes—is the most powerful and moving part of *Battaglia*. When the barber-surgeon tends to the wounds, all aggression vanishes; both victors and vanquished suffer, and the focus shifts to healing. The moans and wails, expressed in a chromatic scale, serve as a reminder of the futility of war. This is a symphony of hope, suggesting that the day will come when humanity turns its back on armed conflict.” (From Mr. Letzball’s commentary) PANCLASSICS
