Mendelssohn was only 16 years old when he composed this magnificent octet. The magnificent sound produced by the eight instruments was unprecedented, and it is well known that following the success of this piece, numerous composers wrote works using the same instrumentation. The Piano Sextet was composed even earlier, when he was 15, but it was not published until after his death. The aggressive and lively musical ideas are quintessentially Mendelssohn. Please enjoy these two works by a precocious genius, performed by the unparalleled ensemble of the New Italian Chamber Orchestra, which garnered rave reviews during its 2010 tour of Japan.
