Alexei Lyubimov is a legendary Russian forte pianist who has earned an enormous reputation and following for his vast and timeless repertoire, outstanding interpretation, and mastery of period technique. Following his previous work on an upright piano (Pianino) built by Pleyel, the second release on the NIFC label features Brahms played on a rare concert grand made by the Austrian master craftsman Streicher. The Romantic period was the era of great piano virtuosos and the discovery of the piano's intimate and exhibitionistic possibilities. This album features piano works from the last years of Brahms' life, when he cultivated Baroque and Classical forms and was considered a traditionalist by his peers. The instrument chosen by the genius Lyubimov for this recording is a rare concert grand built in 1878 by Johann Baptist Streicher, one of the most important and innovative piano makers in Vienna throughout the 19th century, and an Austrian master craftsman who was a favorite of Brahms. The piano was made by Johann Baptiste Streicher in 1878.Not only did Streicher strive to outperform its competitors in terms of quality, but it also believed in offering a wider range of models, leading to the development around 1841 of the concert grand piano with a "completely English construction," that is, one that followed the Western model and was subsequently improved by modern American achievements. Only a few such grand pianos were made, with a length of 260 cm, cross-strung strings on a cast-iron frame, and a simple English action, and this is one that will be of interest to piano fans.
