Description:
An Italian Master Performs the Italian-Influenced “Organ Mass” ◆ The “Giant Fugue” Truly Lives Up to Its Name The performance is by 80-year-old maestro Sergio Valtrò. Valtrò has long been known for his deliberate, unhurried style of performance, and this recording, clocking in at a total of 128 minutes, lives up to that reputation with a leisurely pace—a notably long running time for this collection of works, which is typically performed in about 97 to 107 minutes. As a result, the details are magnified and the dialogue between the voices gains a greater sense of depth, creating an atmosphere that makes you want to listen while double-checking the title of each piece. It is also striking how BWV 680—once known as the “Giant Fugue”—is performed in a manner that truly evokes the stride of a giant. ◆ The Source: Frescobaldi’s *Bouquet of Music* From his time in Weimar onward, Bach had access to a vast number of Italian music scores, among which was *Bouquet of Music*, a collection of Catholic organ masses based on Gregorian chant, published in Venice in 1635 by Frescobaldi, the organist at St. Peter’s Basilica in Rome *Bouquet of Music*. ◆Bach Transcribed It Himself to Create a Personal Manuscript In 1714, 79 years after its publication, the 29-year-old Bach transcribed the work himself to create a personal manuscript of *Bouquet of Music*. More than 20 years later, he began work on this third volume of keyboard etudes (commonly known as the *German Organ Mass*). ◆Organ Masses Unique to the Lutheran Tradition Now over 50 years old, Bach—drawing inspiration from *A Bouquet of Music*, which he had known intimately since his youth—employed a variety of techniques to work with the familiar Lutheran chorale melodies, resulting in expressive organ masses that are uniquely his own.
