The mere fact that this is the first film in six years from Eli Roth, director of *Hostel*, was enough to raise sky-high expectations—but when I learned it was a cannibal movie, my anticipation turned into a sense of relief. I went into it braced for the worst, yet I didn’t feel as repulsed by the gore—which is the film’s main selling point—as I expected. I suspect this is thanks to the humor Eli sprinkles throughout and his masterful editing. What stands out is its skill in not merely focusing on graphic depictions of gore. In a cannibal genre that has dwindled significantly, this is a masterpiece that goes beyond mere rehashes of the past and offers audiences a fresh perspective.
