Mahan Esfahani

Description:

Mahan Esfahani, one of the world’s foremost harpsichordists! A collection of new 21st-century harpsichord concertos written for Esfahani by Caroline Shaw, Gary Carpenter, and Gavin Bryars! Import edition with Japanese liner notes! Iranian-American Mahan Esfahani, recognized as one of today’s finest keyboardists—and the first harpsichordist in history to be selected as a BBC New Generation Artist—presents a new collection of harpsichord concertos written specifically for him. Renowned not only as a specialist in Baroque music but also in contemporary music, this new collection showcases his versatility. For nearly 100 years—since the 1920s and 1930s, when composers such as Falla, Poulenc, and Martinů were active—concertos for the harpsichord have received little attention. This album features three 21st-century concertos, composed between 2018 and 2023, each with a completely different approach. Caroline Shaw’s work pays homage to Baroque models. Gary Carpenter’s work draws inspiration from the painter Piet Mondrian (as referenced in the album title and cover design) and looks back to early 20th-century orchestrations (such as Falla’s concerto). Gavin Bryars’ work takes the form of a Baroque concerto, but they pay homage to the little-known fact that “Ferruccio Busoni actually played the harpsichord and personally owned an instrument from the American company ‘Chickering’”; the unique scale structures and musical theories advocated by Busoni are subtly incorporated into the pieces as a hidden element. The works by Carpenter and Bryars were commissioned by the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Society, and all three were premiered by Esfahani. This is an album brimming with curiosity that demonstrates new possibilities for the harpsichord in the modern era. Tokyo M Plus
