An album by Ukrainian violinist Solomiya Ivakhiv that sheds light on the music of her homeland, spanning from the past to the present. The recent works included on this album were created amid the tense situation and turbulent days surrounding Ukraine since February 2022. The album features “Lacrimosa,” in which Poleva transformed the tragedy of the civilian massacre in Bucha into a requiem; a suite for solo violin by Havrylets, who passed away suddenly in the early days of the invasion; Krivopust’s “By the River,” a tribute to the 2014 Independence Square protests, and the “Ukrainian Suite,” which celebrates modern Ukrainian identity. The album also features works by 20th-century composers such as Zaleski and Prydatkevych, who fled to the United States to escape the war. The collection showcases music that expresses the nation’s dignity and indomitable spirit, unshaken even in the face of crisis, and concludes with a poignant rendition of a paraphrase based on the melody of the Ukrainian national anthem. Ivakhiv is a graduate of the Curtis Institute of Music. He holds the title of Honored Artist of Ukraine and, based in the United States, performs with major music festivals and orchestras.
