Description:
Felix Mendelssohn, a great composer of the 19th-century Romantic era. He was blessed with five children during his lifetime; all but his fourth son, Felix, reached adulthood, and each is known for having excelled in various fields. The composer featured on this album, Albrecht, was the son of the eldest child, Karl Mendelssohn Bartholdy. Having grown up watching his father, a historian, he went on to become a jurist and political scientist. He participated as an observer for the German side during the negotiations for the Treaty of Versailles in 1919. At the same time, he was an accomplished pianist and composer, and is also known for demonstrating the artistic talent he inherited from his grandfather by publishing poetry and writing opera librettos. The songs included in this album are love songs inspired by Magdalena (Lena) Schoch, who became both his student and close friend. These beautiful songs, which carry on the tradition of the German lied using texts by Eichendorff, Goethe, Heine, and folk songs, are filled to overflowing with romantic passion. Naxos Japan
