The composer Gretzky is known for his "Symphony of Lamentations," a work of mystical beauty. However, when he had just made his debut, he was highly praised by Michael Gielen as an "avant-garde composer" with a penchant for shocking sounds. The "Sonata for Two Violins" on this album is also an explosive clash of sounds from the very beginning. For those who are familiar with Gretzky's later works, this work may seem heretical. In contrast, "String Quartet No. 3" was written for the Kronos Quartet, with whom he had collaborated many times, and was completed in 1995. It is a long work that sums up Gretzky's 30 years of composing, with each melody progressing in dialogue, sometimes using avant-garde sounds, and concluding with the soothing sounds of the cello.
